2024 Dún Laoghaire

Been tryin to fix my bitter battered brain in the pubs of Southern Dublin
Since I tried to scare you off but all you said was “I am sorry”
Was a sorry that felt strange for I believed it was sincere.

And as your imprints fade I recollect your scent of herbs, and greens, and grass
I caught me thinking, I wish I could kiss all the fears from your mind and your eyes.

I am running out of town down to Dún Laoghaire
I wish I’d still be the best thing that you’ve ever had (but I changed)
I hope you’re making friends being nowhere close or near me
And I’ll be sure to end this year down in Dún Laoghaire

Take my brains, my eyes, my thoughts, take ‘em with you when you’re gone.
I’m better sleeping on my own I should have told you all along
Long before you kissed me, solemnly swearing ‘I’ll always be your friend’.

While trying to fix your bitter battered heart I tried to figure out
Why everything I ever did I did for love and nothing more
When nothing more was all I got for trying so hard to love somebody that you’re not

You were sleeping, I was weeping on the bus
None of my books had explained to me that it isn’t love when there’s bloodshot eyes.

I am running out of town down to Dún Laoghaire
I wish I’d still be the best thing that you’ve ever had (but you changed)
I hope you’re making friends being nowhere close or near me
And I’ll be sure to end this year down in Dún Laoghaire
